Developing custom made parametric tools for designers, using platforms like Processing with Python. New knitting patterns can be generated based on a gradient map using mathematical functions such as the noise function.
I used generative knitting to explore the creation of intricate knitting patterns by leveraging algorithmic processes.
With the Use of industrial knitting machines and digital tools, I was able to generate unique, seamless designs.
The app integrates traditional knitting patterns with digital tools. A bitmap is used do define patterns, each pixel’s color values determine how the knitting is divided into distinct sections, with value corresponding to a unique knitting pattern. This method creates distinctive transitions, characteristic of digital designs, which are not feasible through manual planning.
By incorporating these techniques, generative knitting can push the boundaries of traditional fabric design, showcasing the potential of computational methods to create innovative, functional textiles.
This project was done on a Terrot and Seamless
knitting machines.
